Be certain to purchase a website name that belongs to you, so that you can set off~start} to develop your own personal or business stamp. Moreover, many advertising platforms will not allow you to reference an affiliate website, but only a website name that you personally own. A first-rate domain name will be concise (30 characters or less), understandable to the eye and the ear, and reflective of your business or product. The best names end in “.com” and such names are favorite for many online marketing companies, if available.

3. Communications

One more necessary tool is communications, including an Internet Service Provider and a telephone - either land-line, cellular, or VOIP, with or without headset. It should have both local and long distance features, and if you intend to hold teleconferences for your downline, the ability to handle conference calls. If you’re going to do trainings, etc., you’ll most likely want to acquire a teleconferencing service that can manage many, perhaps hundreds or even a thousand, calls concurrently.

4. Hosting Services

You’ll have to have a web hosting service to serve as a “home” for your website. There are many web hosting services on hand to meet the needs of home businesses and affilaite businesses. Their products do differ, as do their prices, so be sure to comparison shop before reaching a decision.

5. Data & Systems Safety measures

You’ll also need robust precautions for your software and data. This can take the form of physical security, plus software such as firewalls, and security applications like McAfee or Norton.

6. Applications & Data Backup & Restore Features

Another requirement is for backup of your locally resident programs and information. In spite of other security measures, there will likely come a circumstance when you experience some sort of a system crash, with either some or total loss of information and required applications. So you will also require a robust backup and restore capability.

7. Goods

You’ll require one or more products to sell - products that you have developed yourself, or ones that have been created by other people. If you develop your custom created goods, then you’ll also have to worry about maintaining appropriate inventories, performing upgrades, handling returns, etc. If you get your products from others, then you’ll have to worry about maintaining the relations with those vendors, order fulfillments, customers are satisfied and proper payment.

8. Affiliate Program Network

If you’re planning to market many affiliate products, you’ll almost certainly also want to participate with one or more Affilate Program Networks (APNs), such as ClickBank, Commission Junction, or LinkShare, etc. to handle your commissions, sales statistics, and other back office functions for you.

9. Web 2.0 Features

The Web is constantly changing, so if you want to be successful in today’s online world, you’ll want sites and services that allow blogging and interactive communities (i.e., ones that use Web 2.0 to enable a whole host of collaboration, using the web as the network platform).

10. Technical Support

And finally - again a commonly overlooked requirement - is the need for dependable technical support - for both your local hardware and software, but even more importantly, for any of your customer-facing websites and product systems.

If your systems go down and you are unable to get rapid technical support from any/all your suppliers, the ensuing downtime can impact your advertising campaigns, you can lose or push away potential buyers, and ultimately, your bottom line will suffer (including your reputation, as well).

Technology is the lifeblood of an online business, and Murphy’s Law being what it is, you need to plan for the ultimate downtime and computer crashes that occur as well. Implementing all these essential technologies will help ensure the success of your online small business.
